Blog Posts Of Note:Week Of October 28th: Disney Buys Star Wars, Andrew Sullivan Is Still Crazy

From: io9: Darth Vader tells other Disney owned characters he’s their father!

There were some good posts around this week, I really wish my favorite bloggers would post more…..Just Prayin’!

Kevin Greenlee wrote about why All Saints Day should be preferred to Reformation Day: All Saints Day Vs Reformation Day

Abram K-J had an excellent post on All Saints Day on St. Moses the Black (4th Century); he also wrote on the Septuagint: How to Read and Understand the Gottingen Septuagint: A short primer part 1

Joel took a break from writing his book to comment on Andrew Sullivan’s “silly” comments about the Confederacy making a comeback: Andy Sullivan Misses A Few Things With This Cold Civil War Bit. For the record, on my part, Andrew Sullivan may be crazy, but he’s right for the most part. The Confederacy is making a comeback, if you don’t notice certain governors of southern states bringing back Confederate History month, you are turning a color-blind eye to reality.

Lastly, Amanda Mac had her Theology Round up, which speaking of Confederacy, she linked to The Gospel Coalition’s post on Abraham Kuyper, which was silent on how his theology became used during South African apartheid. Not surprising given the TGC’s support for paleo-confederates like Douglas Wilson.

I wanted to take the time to say something about Disney buying Star Wars. First of all, if you think George Lucas has given in to his (nerdy) critics because of the “pre-quels,” I think you are delusional. Lucas cares nothing about fans say, stop giving yourself so much credit. I am curious to see where Disney takes Star Wars with the next trilogy, I will be watching with cautious eyes. My biggest fear is that the ideology and practices of the Sith will be watered down, because that’s what Disney does, waters down violence and angry speech to attract families to come to their movies. The Disney channel, on the other hand, hypocritically teaches young kids through shows like iCarly about how to be obsessed with dating and romance. I am concerned, but it is Disney, and they did do the Avengers. So, yeah, I’ll sit back and wait.

Give the Heir to the Empire trilogy a chance, (motivate me to read it since I own them)!!!!

Blog Posts of Note This Week: Politics & Religion, Jesus the Jedi, and Walmart!

This week in blogging, there were some excellent posts on politics, comics, and religion. Here is what I have been reading.

The Politics Of Doctrine by Danny Webster, a response to Wayne Grudem’s partisan Christianity.

The Real Gospel by TC Moore, and how the Gospel isn’t a “Get-Out of Hell” free card.

Disability and Autonomy by Suzanne McCarthy, on the agency of those who are disabled, gender and religion.

How Walmart Dictates The American Economy by Christian Salafia, a prophetic post which couldn’t have come at a better time, since there is construction right across the street from me and where a local church is for a new Wal-Mart.

Evan of Culture War Reporters: Storm and Black Hair, another nice post on racial identity and comic books.

I could not agree more with LaToya Peterson and her Racialicious Crush of the Week: Barbara Jordan. And I didn’t know about Jordan’s views on immigration either, with all the research I have done.

Zak Hunt’s Jesus Ordained Women, So We Should Too is an excellent post, and is a similar perspective to the one I have.

Julia of Women In Theology: Halloween Costuming: Some Feminist Basics; I also have to wonder what this means for cosplaying over all!

Lastly, James McGrath’s posts on Jedi Jesus has me thinking about how Jedi Jesus is a parody of white images of Jesus, along with my reading of The Color of Christ. Also, been thinking about Jesus as Sith Lord, the dark side of the force, and the darkness of God (transcendence). More to come, I assure you!: How Not To Evangelize Jedi and Jedi Jesus and Jedi for Jesus

Imagine a shirt: Jesus Is (Sith) Lord!

#GeekPrideDay: Confessions of a Black Bible Nerd

Cover of "Robocop"

In high school, I used to run from my Geekiness because I wanted to fit in with everyone. But ever since I was young, I was a geek. First introduced to Star Wars by my parents (who weren’t into science fiction), then RoboCop, yes, ah RoboCop was my small obsession. I loved the movie, the cartoon every Saturday morning, and even in the 5th grade, I had a RoboCop figure, gun and all. I recently watched that movie again, and found 2 interesting things. First, that film has a lot of F-bombs in it. Second, interesting fact I learned in the past couple of days via Twitter and Wikipedia (I trust Twitter friends a whole lot more) that Paul Verhoeven, RoboCop’s director, is a member of The Jesus Seminar (no comment) and claims that RoboCop is an American Jesus. I do recall a story of Jesus in Galilee, walk into a corporation’s headquarters, and shooting it’s CEO 30 feet out the window. Yeah, it’s in Mark 27, I believe. Oh, and I cannot wait for the RoboCop Reboot!

:-)

All kidding aside, at a summer camp, I came to discover I was a Bible nerd as well. I knew a lot of passages, and won a competition. Besides geeking out to Scripture, I also have always been a big Politics Geek. I was at my worst in Undergrad, reading political biographies, minoring in poli sci, fanning out to The West Wing (Jed Bartlett is my President!), watching Fox News and CNN almost constantly, oh and hanging out at a political website, commenting and philosophizing. Then, in seminary, I got it bad for Theology, which I found was way more fun than Religious studies. I always carried a Jurgen Moltmann book with me and there was a Facebook group I always was arguing with someone about. In short, Theology rocks! I never have been that athletic, but I did, and still do keep up with sports trivia and my favorite teams. Go Go White Sox.

Perhaps one of the most helpful things about me embracing my nerdiness has been the television show COMMUNITY, and how I get all of their pop culture references, and if I can do so, then what does that say about me, except that I am a geek too. Always have been.

It is for this reason I understand the outrage of many Black Comic geeks like this blogger. Is genre of Fantasy an escape away from the Colored Threats to white society? Not all of Fantasy is like this, but the typical medieval settings with dark skinned savages have me asking questions. These thoughts constantly haunt me as I am now reading A Game Of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. How do you cope with a genre that hates you or even worse, is apathetic towards people your skin color out of some notion of “The Market?” Community is an enjoyable show, but not without it’s problems and racist tropes. What show doesn’t? But why was there such a huge uproar about the Hunger Games film, and Rue and Cinna being casted as Black, but no word on Thresh, huh? Just how transgressive would it be for Jesse Williams as Finnick Odairin the Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire? When it comes to science fiction/comic book/geek culture, its sad to see that there will not be any enthusiasm for a minority lead or written products as there has been for comics & novels for the GLBTQ community. I guess that’s why I remain cynical, and suspicious, and I guess that part of consumerism’s racist legacy too.

Taking a Vacation

I have decided to take a vacation. From criticizing President Obama. And I am sick of hearing criticism from conservatives being very partisan, about the President going on vacation. Umm, real family values is about spending time with your family! And the sabbath is made for humanity, remember?

Congresswoman Maxine Waters has asked for permission from the black community to let the Congressional Black Caucus criticize the President.

A more demonstrative and symbolic criticism is coming from Tavis Smiley and Cornel West, with their nationwide poverty tours.

With black leadership finally opening up their eyelids, I am taking a break.

Until we go to war in Syria.
