Vine Deloria Jr.’s God Is Red part 2

REPRESENT!

God Is Red: Part 1

In the last post, I explored a bit into Deloria Jr.’s theology as it related to concepts of space. Deloria Jr. continues his investigation into the U.S. American encounter with First Nations’ populations. In this chapter, he gives instances in which Native Americans are represented both in the print media as well as television/film. They are either the passive, friendly folk who help the White man, or they are the violent savages who eat each other and worship demons, sorta like the primitive people that Cindy Jacobs likes to make racist rants about.

What does representation have to do with theology or practicing religion for that matter? It may have to do with telling our stories with integrity, acknowledging the “brutal facts of history” rather than our metanarratives which promote human progress and tolerance as inevitable.
