Recently, the the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles has been considering a license plate designed by the Texas Sons of Confederate Veterans. Earlier this year, a few states made moves to celebrate Confederate History.
It’s just so funny. In the 1990s, there was this movement (misguided I believe) by so called Black progressive leaders to push for reparations for African enslavement, and the white people back then wanted all of us to stop talking and bringing up race, you know, since slavery is over with. And you know, being the good religious hegemonic community that we are, there hasn’t really been a movement like that since.
However, nowadays the only persons talking about slavery, and keep bringing it up, are conservatives. Whether its social conservatives like Michelle Bachmann and Rick Santorum signing pledges claiming that black people are worse off now than African enslavement (life is much better when black people are in bondage….hint hint hint) or so-called political states rights conservatives, that wish to secede from the Union like Texas Governor Rick Perry.
According to the online progressive scholarly magazine Irreligion Oddish-patches, the Confederacy is having a kind of a revival. I guess you could say that when it comes to supporting the Union, I am patriotic in this manner. I don’t support anarchy whether it comes from neo-Confederates or Anabaptists. Its just not how I understand Christ’s activity in the world.
You would think that defenders of Abraham Lincoln’s legacy would be around given the return of the Confederacy, but nope, they aren’t. You would think that a historic organization such as the NAACP would be around to gather the opposition, but nope.
Where are the Luke Skywalkers when you need them?

Rod, good riff. Maybe some evangelical in the Texas Department of Corrections will sell this new license plate enterprise? To the Texas public? By touting making confederate license plates as the way to solve the black youth unemployment crises, eh? Or, are license plates in Texas made by prison inmates?
Recently did a riff on racism, California three-strikes law, and holy white church … for what it’s worth.

Thanks Jim,
I’ll take a look!
… Rod, my riff in the post I linked – that riff facing up ‘progressive theology’ – involves the recent slam against Tony Jones as a borderline racist … my point is not anti-progressive or anti-Tony Jones theology per substance (I’m no fundy!) … but that new ‘progressive’ theology is inevitably racist-white in skew per demographics … we’re blinder than we know (me included) … I would have purchased some pics of the recent progressive, Wild Goose Festival, but I couldn’t find any whites in the pics, since all the attendees of the Festival were brown, black, red, or yellow (snick – nearly all white!) … at least some native American lib. theologies have owned it, dammit, “God IS Red!”, but a lot of the white wanna-be progressives is … white … ~ Jim
Jim,
I am with you on Tony Jones/ progressive theology types. That’s why I am an equal opportunity critic.
