Not all of Texas. Just our leaders.
Look, when you are part of a national federal system, plain and system, we do not live in an anarchic feudal society that states’ rightists want. The federal government, in the U.S. Constitution has jurisdiction in the area of naturalization, so that way, there won’t be any difference in the manner citizens be treated or the process by which immigrants become citizens. Even the conservative Southern Baptist Convention is calling for mercy in regards to immigrant rights. My suspicion is that the bill is targeting “sanctuary cities” like Houston; first the state will come for the cities, then they will come for churches. What is even more appalling is the racialized view of economics that the law reflects. How so? Well, one version of the bill suggested that businesses hiring an undocumented worker would be in violation of the law, unless, get this, they are hiring a MAID, A LAWNMOWER, OR ANY OTHER HOUSEWORKER. Yeah, so apparently, Slavery is back en vogue! And it’s an example of states’ rights anarchy at its worst. Arbitrary chrony capitalism.
States should stop interfering with this process, under the cry, “well, the federal government isn’t doing its job.” You know what would be the states doing their job? Balancing their budgets without cutting education, and without paying millions of dollars for formula one race car driving. Texas politics. Just gotta love it.
I just wish theologian Roger Olson in office.
You can read the online version of the bill here.
