Last night, Optymystic Chad, a few other friends, and I Marvel Nerded our way to see a non-3D version of X-Men:First Class. I was expecting First Class to be a third rate film as Marvel treats its fans like 2nd-class citizens once more, like X-Men Origins: Wolverine, with the ever spectacular Will.I.Am–who ruined the entire movie with his bad acting. His character was not even necessary, but whatevs.
First Class was amazing, with an unexpected and hilarious cameo by a well known X-man. There weren’t any real plot twists, but there were some surprising acting performances. James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Kevin Bacon, (as Charles Xavier, Erik Lehnsher/Magneto, and Sebastian Shaw) were incredible.
Louisville-native Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique/Raven was impressive and the hype surrounding January Jones as White Queen lived up to its billing. The additional Banshee storyline was a little inspirational and unexpected as well. It fit in with the overall story arc.
Like all Marvel movies, except Thor maybe, there was that unfaithfulness to the original story (Havoc as Cyclops elder brother–ugh ugh ugh), but with no guest appearance by Stan Lee or any secret trailers or spoilers at the end of the credits, X-Men:First Class deserves a PJ round of applause.
Mutant and Proud.
