    It would be nice to get away from one-dimensional thinking, but (no matter what the issue is) people seem to really like their binary cognitive structures.

    Regarding the “slippery slope” part, I have in fact often heard slippery slope arguments from liberals about ideas or policies that put us on the slide to conservatism. Usually, it’s something like describing your opponent as putting us on the path to theocracy, or to fundamentalism, or a police state, or to being hurled back into the Dark Ages.
