I thought you would like to know what my plans were for Black Friday. Even though there is a whole month dedicated to Black history, and since everything labelled black for the most part has a negative connotation, I thought it’d be a good idea to read some black literature: starting a science fiction novel, Kindred, by Octavia Butler and Yellow Back Radio Broke Down, a western by Ismael Reed. I learned about Butler through Monica Coleman’s Making A Way Out of No Way, and I have read Reed once, his satire about Broadway and multi-culturalism entitled Reckless Eyeballing.
Think it’ll be a good idea to start reading these books while listening to all black music? The blues. Jazz. Gospel. Hip-hop. R &B. etc.?
I just love Black Friday, don’t you?

A part of black history is the story of Toussaint L’Ouverture from Haiti who fought against the French oppressors and the slave trade. A dramatized clip of his last moments in prison is found here: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2468184/ This is from the film “The Last Days of Toussaint L’Ouverture.”
