In a recent comic book storyline, Aquaman had been made into a zombie (or a Black Lantern for the initiated). After a big fight, life won out and Aquaman was resurrected via the white light of creation. As it turns out, he may now wish he would have stayed dead.
The gulf oil spill continues to blight the gulf and instead of the unity and togetherness that many times accompanies a major US tragedy, it seems that our partisanship has finally reached the point that unity, even in the midst of tragedy, is no longer possible. Many accuse Obama of playing politics with the oil spill, especially with Obama’s ban on new oil drilling. Does this ban affect many oil workers? Yes. BP should pay them for their loss as well. I wonder if our government was accused of playing politics with the assassinations of MLKJr. and Kennedy when Civil Rights legislation was passed.
Am I the only one who thinks that it is ok to “play politics” is playing politics means using the zeitgeist of a moment to push forward with new policies that we know are right in our hearts, but would otherwise be to lazy or disinterested to rally behind?
Latest figures cap the oil spilling into the gulf at 100,000 barrels per day. Yikes. Will the gulf come back from this? Sure. Creation is resilient. Will everyone affected get justice? In the words of Prince John, “Forgive me a cruel chuckle. Heh-heh-heh”. Yeah right. BP will do just as little as they can get away with and those poor who have made their living off the land, but just, will likely be pushed aside because they didn’t get their paperwork just right.
So for most of us, our lives will go on. Things will be ok for most of us away from the gulf, but the unseen horror that we will all miss is the environmental impact that will continue long beyond our ability to focus on news. Back to the comics, since Aquaman’s return to the land of the living, it seems that his old faithful power to call on marine life forms for aid still works, but with a caveat. He can only call on DEAD sea animals. Lucky for Aquaman, there will be an abundance of dead sea creatures to help him out against evil. That is, assuming he doesn’t join them in death again, via oil in his lungs… or from a broken heart.

Is it just me, or is this post the origin of comic book blogging on Political Jesus? I love the Aquaman book-ends to a serious problem.
